Waitangi Day: What’s on

Our national day doesn’t fall on a long weekend this year, but there’s plenty to do around the country. Waitangi Day is the perfect opportunity to get informed, get entertained and have some old fashioned Kiwi fun.

Waitangi Festival – Waitangi, Northland

Get a real feel for the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi where it actually all took place in 1840. Celebrations kick off the evening prior, with a performace by the Royal NZ Air Force Band, NZ Army Band and Royal NZ Navy Band. Get up bright and early Waitangi Day with a Dawn Service on Treaty Grounds at 5am. All day entertainment follows, with performances, market stalls, food, and plenty to keep the kids busy. 

Summer Vibes Waitangi Day Festival – Northcote, Auckland

Check out the first ever Summer Vibes Festival at Awataha Marae this Waitangi Day. Local music hit Kings is set to hit the stage alongside international DJs. Food, art and craft stalls are brought to you by the renowned Coatesville Markets. A kids zone will keep the rugrats busy, and you can learn about the true meaning of Waitangi with educational stalls.

Waitangi Day ki Okahu – Orakei, Auckland

What’s more Kiwi than a day out by the beach, enjoying good kai and beats? Pack your togs, set up your picnic blankets and enjoy live music while the kids are entertained. Watercare have a free water station – just bring your own water bottle. 

The Enchanted Walk – Mt Albert, Auckland

Pack your fairy wings along with your fairy bread to explore the magical Enchanted Walk at Alberton. Spot the elves, count the gnomes and admire the fairies. Find the hidden doors and secret homes amongst the tree trunks and gardens. Bring your own painted pebble to add to the Magical Stone Garden. End the day with a picnic in the stunning Alberton grounds.  

Waitangi Day – Hamilton

Waikato Museum hosts an important Waitangi event which reflects on the significance of the day. Attend talks, enjoy traditional performances, get amongst the crafts and enjoy storytime for the kids.

Fleetwood Mac & Stevie Nicks Tribute Show – Whitianga

What could be better than experiencing Fleetwood Mac live at a Coromandel seaside town? OK, it might not be the real deal, but we can guarantee it’ll be a whole lot of fun. Landslide band will be playing all the hits. Come along, sing along, and boogie the night away. 

Tribute to Elton John – Hawkes Bay

If you missed out on Elton John tickets, get amongst this tribute concert brought to you by Michael Stodart and band. Set in the stunning Abbey Winery & Brewery, you’ve been promised all the hits. Bennie & The Jets, Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, Candle In The Wind, Tiny Dancer, Your Song,  Rocket Man, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, Good Bye Yellow Brick Road, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, I’m Still Standing, Crocodile Rock.

Waitangi Day commemorations, Porirua, Wellington

If you’re in the capital and looking to remember what Waitangi is really about, head along to the annual Porirua commemorations. Bring the whole whanau for live music, traditional games and creation stations. You’ll even have the opportunity to get on the water with waka tours.

Wild Stock – Wellington

Taste the best drops of vino from New Zealand and around the world, along with beer from over a dozen breweries. Pair with some good food for an all round good time this Waitangi.

Tiriti o Waitangi – Waitangi Day Celebrations, Otago

Get informed and entertained on our national day at Ōtākou Marae. Enjoy good old fashioned fun with powhiri, traditional entertainment and music, craft and food stalls.  

Fat Freddy’s Drop – Christchurch

Get your best moves ready for Kiwi music icons Fat Freddy’s Drop at Hagley Park this Waitangi. Joined by an impressive line-up of international acts, this might be the biggest party of the summer.
