5 reasons travel is good for you

They say travel is the one thing you spend money on that actually makes you richer.

It boosts mental health

Obviously a break from work (and copious amounts of good food) is good for the soul. But a refreshing outlook and new experiences actually help rewire your brain, boosting your mood and confidence. Even planning and looking forward to travel can help your mood – a Cornell University study showed the anticipation of a trip can increase happiness substantially, far more than buying something tangible.

It gets us off the couch

When you’re travelling, it’s near impossible to avoid plenty of walking in your adventures. It keeps you fit and decreases your risk of heart disease – and you’ll hardly notice the exercise amongst the adventures. Combine that with the boost in brain health, people who travel are even expected to live longer.

Travel gives us perspective

There is a quote that goes “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page”. Experiencing other cultures makes us more tolerant of others, and gives us an idea of where we fit in the world. Being confronted with the differences between cultures can help us to re-evaluate our priorities in life. If you’re stuck in a rut, it gives us a chance to reflect on where we’ve been (and where we want to go next). Experiencing somewhere new also often makes us grateful for what we have at home (even if you loved your destination) – whether it’s lack of crowds, a slow lifestyle, access to nature.

It makes you more interesting

Never be stuck at a barbecue with nothing to talk about again. Nearly everyone loves to hear a good travel story. You’ll have something in common if they’ve travelled to the same spot, or you’ll be able to inspire them to go there one day.

Travel experiences last a lifetime

Travelling somewhere is obviously great when you’re there, but what about when you’re home? You’ll have lifelong memories, but you can always re-create those feelings at home. Learn to make the French crepes. Make an effort to step out of your comfort zone once in a while. Or embrace slow mornings when you can.
